CARACAS, June 20, 2017– UNICEF expresses once again its deep concern about the impact that recent events in Venezuela have had on children and adolescents.
According to official sources, eight teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 have been killed in demonstrations in recent months. There have been also cases of injured children reported, as well as health and education centers that have been evacuated due to gases or fumes.
UNICEF stands in solidarity with the families of each person, and particularly of each adolescent, that has lost his life in these events, and we reiterate our call to ensure the protection of children and adolescents in all contexts and from all sectors, including in health centers, schools and other meeting places of vulnerable groups.
UNICEF insists on ensuring respect for human rights in the actions of the State during the control of public order and urges that the social demonstrations are carried out in a peaceful manner, always guaranteeing the appropriate protection of children and adolescents.
